This past weekend, Jordan Spieth notched his first win of the 2021-22 PGA Tour season at the RBC Heritage in Hilton, South Carolina. Spieth broke his winless streak last year at the Valero Texas Open where he came away with his first victory in a few years. Spieth has now put himself into the win column in back to back seasons, winning both on Easter Sunday.

Jordan Spieth’s three under first round score put him in the middle of the pack at the end of day 1. Six strokes back from leader Cameron Young, Spieth had lots of work to do the following three rounds. He had a five whole stretch on the back nine where he was able to string together three birdies and a bogey to finish his round under par and put him in position to climb the leaderboard going into the weekend.

Like his first round, Spieth had started day two out slow with a birdie and bogey to stay even after his first nine. The back is where Spieth started to creep up the leaderboard. Birdies on 3 holes and no bogeys put him at five under for the tournament and seventh place on the leaderboard, four strokes out of the lead.

Spieth stayed consistent in his third round of play with the majority of his scoring coming on three front nine birdies. Again he played a solid round but it was only good enough to put him into 21st place heading into Sunday.

Spieth started championship Sunday at eight under par just four shots back from Harold Varner. Spieth started his final round out hot, going four under par through his first five holes, eagling both front nine par fives. Two holes later he then added a birdie to the card only to bogey his final hole of the front nine to remain four under on the day and twelve under on the tournament, just two strokes out of the lead. Speith had a rocky start to his final nine holes, putting up a bogey on hole eleven to drop a stroke. Luckily, he went back to playing solid golf, going without a bogey his final seven holes and  tacking on two birdies to finish his round thirteen under par and one stroke off of the lead. With a little bit of luck, Spieth was able to sit in the clubhouse and watch Eric Van Rooyan drop out of contention along with a bogey for Patrick Cantlay to tie Spieth after 72 holes.

Spieth and Cantlay entered a playoff with both of them hitting their approach shots into a bunker short of the green. Spieth who had been putting on a bumker shot clinic all week continued just that and nearly holed out for the win. With only a tap in left for birdie the pressure was on Cantlay to recreate that same shot. Unfortunately Cantlay spray his ball wide right and left himself with a long putt that he would not make, crowing Spieth the RBC Heritage Champion.
