The Sabres learn to persevere with Lund sidelined
The Sartell high school basketball team has been very successful this season. Their success can be attributed to a number of things including their hard work, dedication, and great team play. One of the biggest factors has been the play of senior forward Mason Lund.
Mason has shown great heart and leadership this season. He has been on an absolute tear this season averaging 23 points per game and just under 10 rebounds per game. Lund set school records this season with 51 points in a game and 21 rebounds in a game as well.
A large amount of the team’s success this season can be attributed to Lund, but he just went down with a sprained ankle. The Sabres will have to turn to other players to fill the void he left.
Lund explained what his injury meant to him and the team, “It sucks to not be on the court with these guys. I’m making sure to encourage other guys from the sidelines during games and practices.” He also added, “We have a great group of guys this season. With Blake and I both being out it forces guys into new roles. I have faith that they’ll be able to play at a high level in those new roles.”
Senior guard Evan Templin and senior center Logan Clark are the second and third lead scorers. They are averaging 12.9 and 11.9 points per game respectively. These two have also been huge parts of the team this season, and now they will have to step up big and produce larger numbers during this stretch.
Clark explained, “Other guys will have to step up until he’s back. Not a single person can fill the role that Mason had, it’ll be a team effort.”
Templin added, “We’ll be missing a lot of length and of course our leading scorer, so other guys will have to step up. I still think we have a good defensive team even without him. The offense will also have to come in different ways now without him.”
Evan and Logan have both come up huge multiple times this season for the Sabres, but will they be able to take on this extra load and produce? The Sabres also have great depth on the bench with guys like senior forwards Steven Brinkerhoff and Jackson Vos providing great hustle and heart whenever they step on the court.
The Sabres are currently 15-4 and hope to increase that win percentage and stay in first place in the conference. They will play Monticello on Monday the 14th with hopes of securing a win at home.
