Shohei Ohtani became a free agent this off season after his deal expired with the L.A. Angles. Shohei had multiple offers on the table with the Giants of San Francisco, Toronto Blue Jays, and the LA Dodgers.

Ohtani declined the 1 year 20.3 million dollar qualifying offer ahead of the Tuesday deadline. In return for Shohei leaving, the Angles will receive draft pick compensation.

Reportedly the Giants offer was very similar to the one he took with the Dodgers. There are some interesting details to look at in Shohei’s new contract with the Dodgers. For starters, he opted to differ 680 million out of his 700 through 2034 to 2044. This idea came from Shohei because he wanted to give his new team as much wiggle room as possible with the salary because all he wants to do is win. Secondly, his contract is the biggest in major sports history.

This deal is even larger than Messi’s deal with Barcelona in 2015. The Dodgers are also now the front runner to sign the Japanese pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto. The L.A. Dodgers have been saving some money for the past couple years, in order to prep for this contract.

The Dodgers have been the most playoff consistent franchise in the MLB for over the last decade, and they just had their poster boy retire and now is the time for the new era in L.A. Dodger history.
