Thursday night Sartell Sabre fans packed the Bernicks Hockey Arena to watch the boy’s high school hockey team play their first game of the 2023-2024 season against the Willmar Warhawks.

The team rushed out on the ice led by two youth flag bearers Kane (3rd grade)  and Jaden (5th grade). Before the national anthem, we highlighted the seniors on both sides including this year’s captains: Baylor Stebbins, Noah Hacker, Carter Bollinger, and Tony Colatrella.

Our starting lineup consisted of Tony Colatrella(#22) on center, Carter Bollinger (#21) and Wyatt Laidlaw(#13) on defense, as well as  Kaden Peterlin(#15)and Keaton Landowski (#17) as forwards.

In the first period at the time mark of 10:23 Brayden Klande (#12), a sophomore,  shoots not only the first varsity goal for the team, but for him as well! He was assisted by freshman, Collin Otto (#18), and Tony Coatrella (#22). Willmar had a cross-checking penalty against #9 Griffin Heid at 6:33 minutes. In the end, with only 37sec left in the 1st period, senior Kyan Rieder (#19) scored unassisted. The Sabres left the ice with 21 SOG and Willmar with only one SOG.

SCORE- 1ST PERIOD

After intermission, the boys came back onto the ice with more aggression and put up a whopping 6 goals! Freshman Devin Jacobs (#7)  showed off his skills with his 2 assists in this period, both to Baylor Stebbins (#9). That wasn’t the only highlight though, defenseman Carter Bollinger (#21) chipped one in from the blue line unassisted. We put up another 21 SOG and the Warhawks left with 6SOG, all were blocked by senior goalie  Noah Hacker (#30).

SCORE- 2ND PERIOD

In the last period, there were lots of penalty calls and rough moves on the ice. Willmar’s (#21) Gabriel LaRue had an interference which put him in the box for 2min. Sartell had quite a few minors as well including too many men on the ice, slashing, tripping, and boarding. But they made up for the lost time in the box with two goals. The first at 7:45 by junior Jacob Volker (#8),(even strength), and the assist by (#26) Zach Swanson. The game ended 10-1 with 51-7 SOG leading to yet another Sabre win leaving fans in high spirits. The team will head to the Hopkins campus to take on Blake boys’ hockey this Saturday at 1:00 pm.
