“Robbing” the Saints?
New Orleans Saints fans are filing lawsuits against Roger Goodell and the NFL for “robbing” the Saints of a victory after a controversial missed call in the NFC championship game on January 20th.
During the NFC championship game with 1:49 left in the 4th quarter, the New Orleans Saints had the ball and were attempting to take the lead. Drew Brees attempted to throw a pass to Saints wideout Tommy Lee Lewis but was abruptly hit by Rams defensive back Nickell Robey-Coleman before the ball was anywhere near Lewis. A pass interference call would have given the Saints a 1st and goal. This missed call helped secure the win for the Rams and would give them a ticket to the Super Bowl.
Rule 17, Section 2, Article 1 of the NFL rulebook states that the commissioner has the power to replay the final 1:49 of regulation because of the impact it had on the game and the controversy that surrounds it. Saints fans are filings lawsuits towards Roger Goodell in an attempt to compel him to use his power and utilize this rule.
Many students here at Sartell watched this game and saw the events that unfolded. Many have their own opinions on whether the call was or wasn’t pass interference and if it actually affected the outcome of the game.
Sartell High School Senior, JT Rogers, shared his views on the game and the call. “I believe that it was pass interference and that it should’ve been called.”
When asked if he thought Goodell should use Rule 17, Section 2, Article 1 he responded, “No, it should not be replayed. I believe that Saints robbed themselves, they played sloppy and had many opportunities throughout the entire game to take a larger lead and they couldn’t come up with it.”
This seems to be a similar trend throughout the school. Senior, Drake Lalim agreed with the missed pass interference call and says that is the reason the Saints lost.
