These are some songs that I love and think are memorable from each decade starting with the 60’s.

Music in the 60’s was about trying new things. Progressive Rock was beginning to take on and bands were trying new and different instruments to enhance their music. For this era, “She’s A Rainbow” by the Rolling Stones is a good example of this. I chose this song because I think the background use of piano and the voice melodies are genius. The combination of everything going on is ambiguous and bold and the song made a statement in my mind the minute I heard it.

The 70’s included the rise of disco. Rock also widely expanded and began developing into hard and punk rock. The decade was notable for its contribution to electronic music as the development of synthesizers and harmonizers grew. The song “Telephone Line” by Electric Light Orchestra shows this by the very clear electronic influence. I love this song because it uses sound effects in the background which enhance the song. I also love how the main singer’s voice seems desperate. I think this song is very raw, and the emotion in it is very clear.

80’s music was notorious for becoming diverse. With the development of new wave, alternative rock, and techno pop, “Love Will Tear Us Apart” by Joy Division is the perfect example. This is the first song I think of when I hear the term alternative rock. Its use of upbeat instrumentals mixed with its melancholic lyrics makes it perfectly bittersweet.

90’s music progressed into rap and R&B. It also made its mark in the reggae genre. For this decade, I chose the song “What I Got” by Sublime. I chose this song because it perfectly represents the decade. The casual beat of the song gives off a very reggae feel.  I think the self-titled Sublime album as a whole is an iconic album, but this one in specific feels very significant because of its rhythm and the lyrics used.

In the 2000’s, hip hop was very dominant. Despite this, rock was coming back strong in the form of post-grunge, pop punk, and some cases indie rock. For this decade I think of the song “Violence” by Blink-182. I think of this song because its use of guitar makes it unlike any other song I’ve heard. Additionally, the use of his voice in a way that feels like speaking shows a lot of emotion. I also think the guitar and the background harmonies of the voice gives the song a very passionate feeling that is memorable to me.

The 2010’s continues progressing in pop and hip hop music. Alternative and indie continue to grow and consistently are challenged in their boundaries. For this decade I think the song “Let it All Out” by Sticky Fingers is a good representation. This song portrays this because it is very loose and free. This song feels like it would be in a movie at the end where the characters look back at all their good times, and it reminds me of happiness.
