The lodge manager arrived at the site by 1 a.m. after he got the call 30 minutes prior. He said he could see the fire burning through the windows.
Vanegas the general manager of the lodge told MPR, “Once the windows blew out, and the oxygen and the air got into the lobby, that was the beginning of the end. It exploded so fast in terms of fire, we knew that it could not be saved.”
Firefighters from eight different departments attended the resort to battle the fire. Along with the thirty to forty crew members, there were seven different fire trucks. After the fire was put out the only thing remaining of the lodge was a single chimney.
There were zero reports of injury from the fire and no known initial cause of the fire starting. News from this morning on MPR they are still under investigation of the fires.
The historic North Shore Lutsen Lodge was built in 1855 and founded by C.A.A. Nelson. Nelson was a Swedish immigrant who expanded the resort to support many visitors. The Nelson family owned the resort until 1988 when it was sold to new owners Nancy Burns and Scott Harrison.
In the same interview, Venegas told MPR “The Lutsen lodge will be rebuilt, and new memories will be created from the newly built Lundie building. We’ll re-create the plans and build it back and new memories will be created in the same building as it used to be.”
