This week, there has been a massive storm that has been rolling through southern California. The storm has caused major floods and affected many lives due to the amount of rain that has fallen so far.
According to a CNN article, There have been around 475 mudslides and nine people killed along with the flooding. If that’s not enough, close to 70,000 citizens have lost power in their homes.
Scott Toro, who is a resident of Los Angeles, told CNN “Everybody seems to be OK, I mean, I think we’re all just mentally shaken, but we’re physically, we’re all okay.”
Because of this storm, a state of emergency declaration has been issued by California Governor, Gavin Newsom. This declaration allows for better unemployment benefits for impacted residents, and makes it easier for out of state contractors and utilities to repair damages.
In an LA Times article, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass stated that “We need Angelenos to be cautious, to be careful, to be safe and please, stay home.” This was said on Monday evening at a news conference, shortly after she signed a declaration of local emergency.
