Chip and Joanna Gaines, popularly known by their show Fixer Upper, redesigned a historic building into a 33-room hotel that opened last November. This historic building, which finished construction in 1928, was named Hotel 1928 as a commemorative motion by the Gaines.
For the Gaines to accurately represent the building’s antique nature, they worked with their team to study the architectural and interior design themes of the Roaring Twenties.
In the Architectural Digest, Joanna Gaines says, “We fed off of that and let that lead in the design, things like the glam, the glitz, and the gold.”
The couple, who usually focuses on revamping spaces no larger than family homes, took on this project as the most extensive challenge of their career. Hotel 1928 is a three-story building containing three restaurants and bars, a ballroom, and 33 guest rooms.
Joanna states in the Architectural Digest that “It wasn’t like our typical jobs, where it’s an office or it’s a restaurant or it’s a home. This was a bunch of different things happening in one building…and so I felt like on every floor or in every room I stepped into, it was a different hat we had to put on.”
Gaines used a variety of interior design methods to create moody, modern, and inviting interiors for future guests to enjoy. In classic Gaines style, the building experienced an uproar of positive reviews from customers.
The entire design and renovation process is documented in a series called Fixer Upper: The Hotel, which first premiered on November 8, 2023.
In the Architectural Digest, Joanna Gaines expresses “It was a complex project. Now in the end, though, we can stand back and look at it and say, ‘Oh, it was so well worth all of that.”
