The Sartell sabres are getting ready for the national anthem right before tip off.

Sartell Boys’ Basketball has had an eventful season so far traveling to multiple cities to play against other teams to compete and hopefully come out with a win.  They are they are now half way through the season.

The Sartell Boys’ Basketball team got off to a slow start with starting 4-12 halfway through the season. The Sabres fell to Bemidji 64-50 in the first game of the year and later on that week they took a tough loss to Champlin Park. They took one more loss to Rocori to start the year 0-3.

The Sabres finally got a comeback win against Sauk Rapids 56-54, starting the game off strong. Then Sauk made a run and took the lead for pretty much the rest of the game until Sartell started getting hot from 3 and made a little bit of a comeback. The game started getting out of hand when Sauk Rapids received a technical foul for shoving a player in the back, and that’s when Sartell started having the momentum. It was a fast and hectic game from that point on, but Sartell eventually took the lead with about 1 minute left and never looked back. Gavan Schulte was the leading scorer with 16 that night.

Granite City Classic

Sartell participated in the Granite City Classic tournament and played a tough Elk River team and lost that game. They were looking to move on from that one and looked forward to playing a top 10 team in Maple Grove, but also took a tough loss to them as well.  They battled hard but fell short. They then played a few more games since that tournament and won a couple and lost a couple.

Senior Will Mahowlad said that “There were a lot of great teams and talent in the tournament and playing in this tournament is a great way for us to improve.”

Wilmar

Sartell Basketball beat Wilmar on Tuesday, January 24 to get back into the win column. They headed to Wilmar in an intense CLC matchup and came out victorious.

Senior captain Anthony Mahowald said, “It was a tough win but we battled hard and fought till the end while never giving up.”

It was a great win for Sartell, and they are getting back to work to keep getting better. The Sabres currently sit right in the middle of the pack in the CLC conference.  Overall the Sabres look to have a strong end to the season and hopefully make a deep run in the playoffs.
