6-year-old student shot and wounded a teacher at his school in Virginia

A six-year-old student at Richneck Elementry school in Virginia was taken into custody after shooting a teacher on January 6th.

Police Chief Steve Drew states, “This was not an accidental shooting.”

The teacher and student had actually gotten into an altercation, which lead the student to fire a round at the teacher. No other students were involved or injured.

The teacher was identified as Abby Zwerner, a first-grade teacher in Richneck Elementary School’s staff directory. The teacher’s state has been improving and was listed in stable condition, according to Newport News Police Department, which also noted that the chief had spoken with her and her family.

There were roughly 16 to 20 students in the classroom at the time the gun was fired. After Zwerner was shot, she safely escorted her students out of the classroom.

“She made…sure that every one of those students was safe,” Police Chief Steve Drew said Monday at a news conference.

The child, who is undergoing treatment at a hospital, currently has court-ordered temporary detention until further steps can be taken to determine a solution for this child’s actions and the case overall.
