The Sartell Golf team has high expectations following the conclusion of the 2021 golf season. The Sabres finished 4th in sections, and 3rd in the conference championship. The team is trying to follow in the footsteps of senior captain Logan Hamak, as he won the Central Lakes Conference player of the year and played in the State Tournament at Bunker Hills as an individual.

Now that most of the team has experience under their belt, they are hungry for the upcoming season. The team has set very reachable goals, including winning the Conference and the section, which would set them on pace to go to state. Four of the six players that competed in sections last year, are going to be returning and will be competing in the upcoming season.

When asked about goals for the team in the upcoming season, senior Mason Lund (pictured right) stated, “My goal for the team is to win multiple conference meets.”

Mason completed his first season of competitive golf last season, and he is eager to get back on the course with the team. Mason was a part of the six-man squad that won a conference meet in the 2021 season at the St. Cloud Country Club, when he individually shot 88, and the team combined for a score of 322. With that score, the Sabres edged out Alexandria by 3 strokes, as they won their first conference meet in three years.

When asked what he sees for the team, senior captain Lucas Greenlun (pictured left) stated, “I see a lot of potential for this team. Last year we had a young team, as most of the players were playing their first year of varsity golf. After seeing how each team member performed in tournaments over the summer, I wouldn’t be surprised if we can run away with some conference meets this year and make a run in sections. We have a lot of talent on this team and the chemistry is very high, I wouldn’t be surprised if we make a lot of noise this year.”

When asked what his goals are for the upcoming 2022 season sophomore Lance Hamak (pictured right) stated, “My goals are to break into the 60’s a couple of times, I would also like to average around par, and eventually go to state. I hope that we can make it to state as a team, but being so close last year to going as an individual has made me hungry to make it this year.” Lance is the younger brother of former Sartell golfer Logan Hamak.  After watching Logan at state, Lance is ready to get there and prove that he can play with the big boys.

The Sabres are hungry and looking forward to the upcoming 2022 season. Most of them have been playing a lot of indoor golf in the off-season in preparation for what’s to come. The Sabres are definitely a team that you should get an eye on as the season gets underway.
