Starting freshman year can seem super stressful, exciting, and even confusing. The freshmen walk into the school, not knowing what to expect, when, in reality, every single student there has been through the same thing. Looking back to the seniors’ freshman year, there are several things they wish they had known when starting high school.
One common piece of advice is to stay on top of your schoolwork. Most freshman don’t realize how much their GPA matters since they are coming from somewhere that didn’t have one. Many seniors admit that their freshman year was the starting point for their GPA, and they didn’t realize how easily it could be affected later on. Your GPA is super important, and it is very easy to go down, but hard to get back up.
Another piece of advice seniors offer is to attend school events as much as possible and join a club or participate in athletics. Some of the best high school memories are made outside of school at events like football, hockey, basketball, and volleyball games. High school goes by so fast, and these are some of the best moments in high school. They are a great way to dress up with your friends and meet new people. Joining a new sport or club is also a great way to step out of your comfort zone and meet new people. Many seniors say that some of their best friends were made through sports.
Many seniors say not to stress about the small things that don’t really matter because they don’t define your high school experience. High school will be full of ups and downs, and being able to let go of the smaller things will help you to focus on what actually matters. It is super important to find a great group of friends whom you can rely on. They will always be there to help. The people you surround yourself with can make a big difference in how you cope with things, and especially manage stress. High school can be super stressful, and surrounding yourself with friends who can support you makes it so much better. Another, yet sometimes unnoticed group of people that can be there for you are the counselors. The counselors want nothing but the best for you, and they want you to succeed. They can help you with your schedule, answer any questions, and even if you need help in your personal life.
Some will argue that high school is the most important time of your life. While it definitely is, it is also important to have fun!! High school is supposed to be a memorable and fun experience. Even though you need to take your classes seriously and stay focused on your future, you should also take the time to enjoy yourself and find out who you are! Make time outside of school to spend with your friends, take fun classes, get involved in things and activities you enjoy, and try not to put so much pressure on yourself!
