The song “Spring into Summer” by Lizzy McAlpine is a light upbeat song. The song is featured on her deluxe edition of her album Older and Wiser. “Spring into Summer” gained tons of popularity around this time last year (2025), and if you have TikTok, you probably have heard the song various amounts of time. The song captures the essence of the transition from winter to spring to summer as well as how life changes in those months. It also is complex in a sense as it explores the bittersweet process of letting go, new beginnings, and embracing change.
“Spring into Summer” is also the same transition we go through as we graduate. Although I have always loved this song, now more than ever I resinate with it. The lyrics never stuck with me until now.
“Spring into summer, and the winters gone. I try to hold onto it but the current’s too strong.”
These lyrics perfectly describe the feeling of being a senior right now. Winter’s gone and we are in spring, as weather warms up, you also feel time being lost. In December when there was still snow on the ground, it felt like so long until it would be April (almost time for graduation) and life is also so busy. From college admitted days to late nights with your friends, the current is strong and life is moving fast. You want time to just pause slightly and give you a moment to catch your breath. It is hard to be where your feet are when you’re busy being asked questions about your future and signing housing contracts.
“Taking a picture of all the people close to us, head below the surface almost never certain of the truth, I’m always forever running back to you.”
Graduation is not just about being done with high school but also parting ways with friends. As many people say it is the “great separation.” I hangout with my friends almost every day and the thought of going our separate ways in just a few months is scary. Anytime I’m having a good laugh with them, reality hits and I realize moments like this won’t last forever. The people who have been a steady rock in my life won’t be a five minute drive away and just as the lyrics from the song say, it feels like you’re never certain of the truth. No matter how many times we promise to visit each other in college it isn’t for certain and you also don’t know who you will meet. I often find myself questioning if I will find friends who will be just as great as the friends I have now.
“If I could jump into the past I’d only change one thing.”
These lyrics in the song is also a relatable line for seniors. Wishing you could go back in time and relieve moments you regret. Throughout high school, you usually face lots of drama and go through hard times, so regret is a common issue. It also makes living where your feet are more difficult.
