Last Friday, we went to the Marcus Parkwood Theater in Waite Park to watch the movie premiere of The Drama with several of our friends. Continue reading to see what the movie is about (which, yes, includes spoilers), what we thought, and the pictures we took along the way!
A new movie starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson has recently come to theatres and is already making its mark in the film industry.
Released on April 3rd, The Drama follows the romantic relationship between Emma and Charlie, highlighting the highs and lows of complicated pasts and even more complicated futures.
Starting off strong, the movie opens in a quiet coffee shop in Boston, Massachusetts, where the main character, Emma, played by Zendaya, is listening to music in one ear while reading a book. Charlie, played by Robert Pattinson, notices Emma and is captivated by her quiet presence. He eventually approaches her and tries to start a conversation, but soon realizes that Emma is deaf in the ear he is trying to talk to her with. After an awkward start to their first conversation, the two immediately hit it off and begin their life together until a shocking secret is revealed at a wine tasting for their upcoming wedding.
Accompanied by their two closest friends, Rachel and Mike, Emma and Charlie share stories all night long. After many bottles of wine, Rachel and Mike share that before their wedding, they told each other the worst thing they had ever done. They encourage Emma and Charlie to do the same, and Emma and Charlie agree nervously. Charlie reveals that the worst thing he has ever done was cyberbullying a girl when he was younger, so much so that she moved away. They all laugh and then turn towards Emma, eagerly awaiting her story. After a bit of silence, Emma shares that when she was younger, she planned to carry out a school shooting. The group falls silent, immediately assuming she is joking. When they realize she isn’t, they are shocked. Rachel is disgusted because her cousin is in a wheelchair as a result of a school shooting. They all leave, and tension rises between Charlie and Emma.

The rest of the movie follows the engaged couple as they try to heal the bond that was weakened between them. Charlie is on edge around Emma and is desperately trying to piece together everything she revealed about her past at the wine tasting. Slowly, Charlie becomes increasingly paranoid, leading him to confide in a coworker, Misha. While caught up in the moment, Charlie kisses Misha. He instantly regrets it, and the two move on. Over time, Emma explains her reasoning for planning a school shooting, and Charlie tries to understand. Although still on edge, the two get married. The wedding is chaotic and filled with drama. During one of the speeches, Charlie accidentally reveals that he cheated on Emma with Misha, and chaos erupts. Misha’s boyfriend, Blake, lunges at Charlie and starts to hit him. What was supposed to be the happiest day of their lives quickly turns into a nightmare.
Left with the last scene of the movie, Charlie is bloody from his confrontation with Blake, and Emma is sliding into the seat across from him in a diner they had briefly mentioned visiting. She introduces herself as if they had never met before, and Charlie plays along. The movie ends with both of them holding hands across the table, looking into each other’s eyes, distraught from the wild day they’ve endured together. It’s at this moment that both of them see each other as more than their past, and instead, see them for the people they have come to love.

Anna’s Take:
The Drama was definitely a good movie that made us consider many different scenarios. The movie continuously teases a plot twist that never seems to come, which is a little frustrating. The way that we got to witness the characters go crazy made us go even crazier when nothing happened. However, after seeing the movie, I thought a little more about its point and title. The whole point of The Drama was to be dramatic. To foreshadow events that may never happen, just to keep the viewers on the edge of their seats. I think it was a great movie, but I wish it had ended differently, and a plot twist had actually happened. I would recommend seeing this movie on a Tuesday, so you don’t spend as much.

Lauren’s Take:
I think The Drama overall was a good movie. Do I think it was worth the $15 I spent? No. While the movie is good in the sense of bringing awareness to school shootings, I kept waiting for there to be more twists, and those never came. I went into the movie thinking I was going to be on the edge of my seat the whole time, but I nearly fell asleep at the end. The trailer that was released hyped up the movie far too much. Although Emma is portrayed as the “villain” of the story, I think that the real villain is Rachel, Emma’s maid of honor. I believe Rachel’s actions, locking a mentally disabled kid in a closet and leaving him there overnight and not telling anyone, are worse than what Emma was thinking of doing. Even though Emma was wrong to even think of such a malicious act, Rachel had no regrets about what she did. Going along with what Anna said in her review, I would recommend seeing this movie on a Tuesday when tickets are cheaper, or better yet, waiting to watch it on a streaming service in the comfort of your own home.
