Walking is beneficial…
Walking outside can significantly improve someone’s physical and mental health. Taking part in physical activity is shown to improve brain function, which includes learning and judgement, and may even reduce the effects of anxiety and depression, according to VCU Health.
30 minutes every day can improve cardiovascular health, strengthen bones, reduce body fat, and benefit muscle strength and endurance. Serious conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and even some cancers can all have a lower risk with the addition of walking, according to Better Health. Briskly walking is proven to be just as effective for your health as running. Walking also has a lower risk of injury according to the American Heart Association.
There are also many cognitive benefits of walking as well. It can improve memory and reduce risks of dementia. It also is proven to improve mental health and emotional well-being, according to the American Heart Association.
Why going outside is beneficial…
Many people experience a mood change when the season changes due to the lack of sunlight. Especially for people who live in colder climates, the days are shorter, and nights are longer, and they spend significantly less time outside in the winter.
Being outside in nature, like a park, the mountains, the beach, along a river, and even just in your backyard, is shown to improve well-being. Spending time in nature is even considered a form of therapy, according to VCU Health.
According to research, light is considered an antidepressant. When full-spectrum light hits our retina, a signal is sent to multiple parts of the brain. These parts are involved with regulating mood and our circadian rhythm, which both impact our optimal mood states, according to VCU Health.
I believe that walking outside has improved my personal well-being. My favorite place to go walking is on the Wobegon Trail in St. Joseph, MN. I also go for walks either on the road outside my house, on a treadmill, and I also enjoy walking on River Road in MN. My favorite thing is to go for walks right away in the morning during the sunrise. I like walking with my friends, my dogs, or my mom. Walking is also a fun way to explore a new place instead of driving.
Here are some snapshots from some of my favorite outside walks:
I asked some people how they felt about walking outside and why they believe it is beneficial:
