Why is Letters of Love Important?

Children with serious illness sometimes feel lonely, scared, or left out while staying in hospitals. Receiving a handmade letter or card can make their day better and remind them that they are not alone and that people care about them.
How does the Letters of Love organization help children emotionally?
The organization focuses on encouragement, hope, kindness, and positivity. These messages can help improve a child’s mood, reduce stress, and give them strength during difficult treatments or long hospital stays.
Who participates in Letters of Love?
Students, volunteers, and even community members from different places participate by writing letters and creating cards. This allows people of all ages to help make a difference in a simple but effective and meaningful way.
How are the letters created and sent?
Participants create letters and cards with kind, encouraging, and meaningful

words. Then these letters are sent to hospitals or healthcare facilities, where they are distributed to kids who are facing illnesses.

Letters of Love at Sartell High School
The Letters of Love club at Sartell High School was originally started by other students in previous school years. Seniors, Emma Johnson and Jenna Jansky, helped get it going again, since it is an easy way for students to make a big difference. They organize Sabre Time meetings once or twice a month and send reminders so students know when to attend. During each meeting, they provide cards, markers, and other supplies, along with ideas to help students create short but heartfelt messages for people facing serious illnesses. Johnson and Jansky also help students brainstorm what to write and bring a positive, encouraging energy to every meeting. Being a member of Letters of Love club is a simple way to spread kindness and support to those who need it most.

What inspired Grace Berbig to start LOL at Orono High School?
Grace was inspired to start this club because her mom was diagnosed with cancer when she was ten years old. Through her mom’s cancer treatment, Grace found that writing cards and making drawings for her mom made her so happy and made Grace feel close to her mom even when she was at the hospital. Her mom lost her battle with Leukemia about a year after her diagnosis, which completely broke Grace’s heart. Losing her mom is still the hardest thing Grace has ever gone through, but she felt it was her responsibility to create something good out of it, which is why she started Letters of Love!

How did Grace get students at her school involved when she first started LOL?
Grace got students involved by marketing the club meetings around her school with posters and posted about it on her Instagram a lot! She also bought donuts for their first meeting which she thinks helped get people in the doors too😊.
Why does Grace believe handwritten letters hold special meaning for people who are ill?
Grace thinks that handmade cards are meaningful to everyone! She doesn’t think she knows a single person who doesn’t have a box of birthday cards or letters that they have kept. Grace also said that letters are a beautiful way to display love, encouragement, and kindness to anyone–especially to kids who are fighting a battle that no child ever should.

Letters of Love means everything to Grace. She said that she has met many of her closest friends through this organization. It has provided her with purpose in life, and it also makes her feel close to her mom, who she misses every day. Grace said that she doesn’t know who she would be without LOL. It is a a big part of who she is, and she is so blessed to continue running the organization seven years after she started it at her own high school in Minnesota!!
