A Democratic bill created with the intentions of reviving Affordable Care Act subsidies for the next three years passed in the House 230-196.
This bill is making a statement because 17 House Republicans chose to defy GOP leadership and vote in favor of the bill. This could be the result of affordability and cost of living being one of the main points of tension in relation to the midterm elections.
This bill is now going to the senate where it is expected to die, but a similar bipartisan compromise is hoped to be reached. A group of senators is discussing measures that would include new limits, such as getting rid of $0 premiums.
House minority leader Jeffrey Hakeem expressed great pride about the vote passing.
While congress is working to find a bipartisan solution to expand the Affordable Care Act, President Trump stated that he may veto the legislation. This raises concerns, but the legislation could potentially die if not sent back to congress for a revote.
