The recent arrest by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minneapolis has sparked concern in the Somali community after it was revealed that the person detained was an American citizen.
ICE agents tackled and arrested Mubashir, a 20-year-old and U.S. citizen, in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis on Tuesday, December 9th. Videos all over the internet of the incident shows multiple ICE agents forcing him to the ground outside his work as bystanders watched and recorded the encounter.
Mubashir and many witnesses said that he told ICE agents multiple times that he was a U.S citizen and even said he would show his identification. But he was still detained and taken into federal custody at Fort Snelling. He then was later released after officials could confirm his citizenship.
This specific incident drew a lot of attention, with leaders and the community in Minneapolis criticizing it. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Fray said the arrest was “unacceptable” and that detaining a U.S citizen without verifying their status creates a huge civil rights concern.
Many advocates and residents say that this arrest was due to racial profiling, as Mubashir is a Somali American, and the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood has a large immigrant population. The arrest shows how the aggressive immigration enforcement tactics being used by ICE have affected not only undocumented immigrants, but also U.S. citizens.

This arrest has led to tension in the city as many businesses are frustrated because lots of their customers are staying home in fear, lowering sales. Leaders are calling for greater accountability to prevent wrongful detentions in the future. The video below shows community members honking horns and blowing whistles to disrupt ICE activity and warn others in the area. This highlights the growing frustration and fear many Minneapolis residents feel following this incident.
