David Maland was a 44-year-old man with a family at home and was just weeks away from asking his girlfriend to marry him. He was a military veteran who happened to work security duty at the Pentagon during the 9/11 attack.
David went to work on January 20 expecting to have a normal day but had no idea his life would soon take a huge turn. He was a United States border patrol agent who was killed on just your average Monday afternoon. A Washington state woman was charged for the fatal shooting of David Maland in Vermont, which happened days after authorities began watching her (Teresa Youngblut) and a German companion (Felix Baukholt).
The border agent had pulled over Teresa and Felix on Interstate 91 to conduct an immigration inspection. Teresa, who had been driving Felix’s car, got out and opened fire on David Maland and other officers without warning. When Felix tried to draw a gun he was shot. One of the border agents fired on the two but authorities haven’t yet specified whose bullets hit him. David was then shot by Teresa during the shootout. He was shot just 20 miles from the Canadian border in a small town of Coventry, Vermont.
This is a huge deal for Border Patrol because David was the first to be killed by gunfire since 2014 in the line of duty. The 21-year-old woman has now been charged three days later for having two weapons that were connected to the death of David Maland.
