Sartell-enrolled juniors and seniors who are struggling to fill up their senior year schedule are given the opportunity to become a teacher’s assistant as an elective credit. This means taking a block out of your day to complete tedious tasks that may not be worth the teacher’s time such as making copies, taking out recycling, cleaning up after classroom activities, etc.
If you are interested in becoming a TA, take a look at your class schedule at the beginning of your senior year and pick out an elective you may want to drop. Connect with a teacher you enjoy, or want to help out and ask them if they would be willing to have you for that block and quarter as a TA. Once you have connected with a teacher to potentially TA for, Talk to your counselor about getting your schedule swapped to accommodate. Keep in mind that the type of teacher you choose to assist can have an effect on the type of jobs you will be doing. For example, if you pick a science teacher you may be responsible for lab set ups and cleaning test tubes, whereas if you choose to assist an art teacher, your responsibilities include photographing artwork, preparing art supplies, etc.
SHS science teacher, Mr. Kripner states that having a TA is mostly helpful because it gives him more time to focus on his students.
One of the counselors here at SHS, Kate Turner, gave some more details that you should know before becoming a TA.
