Belgian women set out to take the world record as the first women to run a marathon every single day of the year. Hilde Dosogne ran 26.2 miles every day for 366 days with it being a leap year. On December 31st, this 55-year-old women finally accomplished this in Ghent, Belgium.
Not only did she run at least 15,444 kilometers in a single year, this 55-year-old women also raised around €60,000 in funds for breast cancer research. In comparison, a marathon is just over 42 kilometers. As Dosogne crossed the finish line, fellow runners celebrated her extraordinary accomplishment.
In an interview with NPR, she then said the toughest part was the beginning because her body had to physically adapt to the restraints on it. Other than the physical part of it, the toughest aspect was the mental part of being at the start line every day again. Every day Dosogne would start to run around 2pm and finish up around 6pm. Her days included waking up at 6:15, working, running, bath, dinner and going to bed.
Just outside the university town of Ghent is where she did most of her running. It had a flat loop around a stretch of water. Dosogne didn’t want to take any risks with the world record so instead of the 42.195 kilometers, she made sure to run 42.5 just for safe measures.
