Whether it’s the heat of summer or the crisp of autumn, Nisswa Minnesota is the perfect Up North get-a-way. Nisswa is about an hour and 15 minutes away from Sartell. Despite only having a population of a little over 2,000, the many beautiful lakes draw many people to the small town. Nisswa has tons of lakes such as Nisswa Lake, Gull Lake, Roy Lake, Clark lake and so many more. These lakes host many fun activities such as water sports, fishing and canoeing. Nisswa was originally named “Smiley Township” in 1900 but was renamed to Nisswa after the Ojibwe word “Nessawae” meaning “in the middle.”
Nisswa may be known for its beautiful lakes, but it is also known for its cute downtown. Downtown Nisswa has tons of stores suitable for anyone and everyone. There is more than 20 different stores around the downtown area. Some of these stores are clothing, home decor, souvenirs and many more. Ardor boutique was one of my personal favorites. This store was very girly and had such cute vibes.
The store had trendy brands such as Elevated Faith and Nikki Bikki.
Downtown Nisswa mainly has lots of small boutiques and shops but it also has a famous and well liked candy shop. This candy shop is called “The Chocolate Ox.” This well liked candy and ice cream shop is a staple in Nisswa. You can find ice cream, exotic candies, taffy fudge and so much more. The Chocolate Ox also holds a impressive wall of different flavors of jelly beans. There is a sweet treat for everyone at The Chocolate Ox so even if you are not the biggest fan of candy you for sure will find something that will satisfy your cravings.
If you don’t like shopping, there is so much more Nisswa has to offer. For folks feeling adventurous take part in Brainerd’s Zip-line Tour. The zip-line glides across the beautiful trees with breathtaking views of the lakes. If you prefer to keep your feet on ground, learn all about how Nisswa is filled with Native American roots, railroad industry and a lot more at the Historical Center.
Every Minnesotan is familiar with the iconic Paul Bunyan.
Bemidji holds the first statue but many more have been built. Jenkins, Minnesota holds a statue for tourists to see. Jenkins is about 10 minutes away from Nisswa and is a must see!
The fun doesn’t have to end when the sun sets. Campfires are a classic when staying up north. The sound of the fire crackling, the smell of burnt wood and just sitting around the fire with your friends and family. Bonfires may be tough if you are just visiting for the day but many resorts, rentals and campgrounds have a fire pit for use.
Minnesota holds such captivating hidden gems. If you are considering a fun, beautiful, close and memorable trip Nisswa is definitely the answer!
