San Jose State volleyball had four teams that have forfeited over the past three weeks. Utah State University came out with a brief statement on X. Along with Utah State, Boise State, University of Wyoming, and Southern State University have all canceled their games against SJSU. Many suspect that it’s due to the fact that they have a transgender player on the San Jose team.
“It’s time for the NCAA to take this seriously and protect our female student-athletes.”- Utah Gov. Spencer Cox
There has been a lawsuit against the NCAA for violating the rights of Title IX. The lawsuit says how the NCAA is letting transgender women compete in women’s sports. The plaintiffs in the lawsuit also want a ruling that declares that the NCAA invalidates and remove all records and titles that results of a competition allowed a transgender person to participate in. This also isn’t the first lawsuit against the NCAA. Another lawsuit was filed against Lia Thomas, a transgender women who was allowed to participate in the 2022 swimming national championship.
Brooke Slusser, a player in the San Jose team, has also joined in on the lawsuit. She is claiming that one of her teammates that she roomed with was transgender and that Slusser did not know.
USA volleyball is the one that makes the policy for the NCAA. USA volleyball allows for transgender participation in the sport of volleyball. They have also acknowledge that transgender people might have a unfair advantage due to their androgenic hormones. The Mountain West Conference does not have their own transgender student-athlete policy. They do have a their own statement regarding gender equity.
