Frank Ocean has been and forever will be my favorite artist. I want other people to experience how amazing his songs are, so I thought, why not do an album review of his most popular album, Blonde? If you’re looking for a chill, slow-paced, amazing collection of songs to add to your playlist then look no further!
To preface this article, I have skipped the spoken word songs that are in this album. They’re not really my type of song to listen to on a day-to-day basis. However, if you think you’d enjoy these songs, I would definitely take a listen to them. Without further ado, here is my review of the album Blonde!
“Nikes” is a very enjoyable song on this album. It’s a chill, slow-paced song to listen to either in the background of a group hangout or when you’re trying to relax before bed. The beats in the back at the beginning remind me a lot of the singer Labrinth who is featured in the TV series “Euphoria.” So, if you enjoy some of Labrinth’s songs, you will definitely enjoy this one.
“Ivy” is a popular song on this album, but I think it’s popular for all the right reasons. I like how powerful Frank Ocean’s voice is in this song, and the lyrics are amazing. My favorite lyrics are a tie between “If I could see through walls I could see you faking. If you could see my thoughts you would see our faces.” and “I ain’t a kid no more. We’ll never be those kids again.”
“Pink+White” is another really popular song on Blonde. I feel like people who don’t really listen to Frank Ocean still know this song, just because it is super popular. I like how soft and flowy Frank Ocean’s voice is in this song and the calming beats in the back. The song, along with the “ah’s” in the back, really reminds me of summer. When I turn this song on, I can feel the heat of the sun shining down on me and birds singing in the background.
“Solo” is an amazingly written song by Frank Ocean. The lyrics are amazing and every line ties subtly into the next, My favorite lyric is from the chorus which says, “There’s hell on earth, and the cities on fire. Inhale, in hell, there’s heaven.” This song feels so peaceful with the quiet “solo” sung in the background and during the beginning. I especially love how Frank Ocean’s vocals sound in this song. He sounds angelic and so beautiful.
“Skyline To” is my absolute favorite song on Blonde. My favorite part of this song is the cut when Frank Ocean stops singing and the beats in the back of the song start to pick up. I love the twang of the beats when Frank Ocean stops singing, and this part of the song makes me ascend. I love blasting this song in my car with the windows down. My favorite lyrics are, “Oh comes the evenin’, gold seekin’ ends. Peace of in my hand worth twice than a friend. And two limbs over the shoulder, carried away.” This song really reminds me of summer because this summer I had this song on repeat 24/7.
“Self Control” is such a classic, amazing Frank Ocean song. I feel like people who don’t know Frank Ocean can still recall lyrics from this song. My all-time favorite lyric from Frank Ocean comes from this song and it’s, “Now and then you miss it, sounds make you cry. Some nights you dance with tears in your eyes.” The ending of this song is especially beautiful. The lyrics, “I, I, I know you gotta leave leave leave” sound somewhat like a tornado. I love the windy sounds in the back and the “ohs” heard in the background. This song is so meditating and really reminds me of my Sophomore year.
“Good Guy” is a short and sweet song. It’s an overall calming and tranquil song with rhythmic beats in the back that really ties it together.
“Nights” by Frank Ocean is another popular song from him. It’s a nice flowy song that’s easy to sing along to. My favorite lyrics are, “And I know it better than most people. I don’t trust ’em anyways. You can’t break the law with them.” This song reminds me of driving at night with my friends.
“Pretty Sweet” is a fast-paced, fun song to listen to. This song gives out a lot of energy, and I love all the vocals in this song. It reminds me of the summer sun shinning down on a beautiful day.
“Close To You” is another really chill song I like to listen to when doing homework, driving in my car, or trying to relax.
“White Ferrari” is my go-to cry song. I instantly start tearing up when I hear this song. It’s such a beautiful raw song and the lyrics are amazing. My favorite lyric in the song is, “I care for you still and I will forever. That was my part of the deal. Honest, we got so familiar.” I relate this song to my sophomore year of high school because whenever I needed a good cry I would turn this song on. “White Ferrari” is an emotional ballad about love and ending relationships.
Seigfried is such a good song lyrically and rhythm-wise. The violin sounds in the back create such a heavenly sound to listen to, and it’s overall really calming. My favorite lyric from this song is, “This is not my life. It’s just a fond farewell to a friend.” This song is one of Frank Ocean’s prettiest songs. My ears are blessed every time I listen to it, especially during that violin part. This song reminds me of summer because of the lyric, “two kids in a swimming pool,” because in the summer when I swim. I’m always reminded of this lyric.
“Godspeed” is, in my opinion, Frank Ocean’s most beautiful song. I have seen multiple videos of people walking down the isle to this song. Its such a raw piece and the way his voice gets more aggressive as the song goes on really shows the emotion he feels while singing. My favorite lyric from this song is, “I let go of my claim on you, its a free world. You look down of where you came sometimes. But you’ll have this place to call home, always.” This song reminds me of old dance team practices when they would play this during stretching. I couldn’t help but sing along to this beautiful song. The lyrics make me think about the future. The place I used to call home will soon become a new place. Whether that be a new dorm, a new city, or new friends. This song makes me think deeply about the quickly changing things around me.
“Futura Free” is a really good, chill song. It’s an easy song to listen to or to simply have in the background of a hangout.
