As the 2024-2025 Homecoming week kicks off, the SHS Student Council prepares for another Carnival filled with food, games, and prizes.
The student council comes together to create the annual Carnival, to boost participation and positive feedback.
A lot goes into planning the Carnival and this year’s cohead, Renee Wilson was hard at work starting in June, wanting to make this year’s Carnival as rewarding as possible.
She says, “I’d say probably the most rewarding part would be seeing all the smiles on the student’s faces and seeing how much they enjoy the event.”
Alongside the time it takes to plan the Carnival, there are many things that the Carnival committee needs to consider when planning for the event.
Wilson says, “The thing that takes the most time to plan is what businesses are attending, many businesses like Mr. Twisty’s and The National Guard need to know a couple months in advance about the event.”
In comparison to other events needing to be planned, challenges arise at times while planning for such an event, and some are easier to fix than others.
Wilson explains, “This year some of our challenges included the owner of Mr. Twisty getting Covid, but we were able to pivot and sold sno-cones out of the concessions stand.”
The Carnival always ends up being an event that reigns in student participation and offers a fun break from school.
Wilson had her first year of planning Carnival this year, and she says, “Although stressful, I’d say people really enjoyed the carnival and that it was a success for the council and the student body.”
At the end of the day, Carnival always ends in a success, leaving students happy to have gained a break from school, and student council happy that the day ended on a positive note.
