As the leaves begin to change from their normal bright green colors to more orange-yellowish tones, it’s a sign that fall is almost here. The air becomes crisper and cooler, sunsets turn into brown hazy beauties, and clothes such as sweaters and sweatpants are seen much more often. Since fall is slowly creeping around the corner, I felt it was only right to list some of my favorite songs that remind me of autumn!
As the seasons change, I think it’s important to change what you listen to. I like my fall songs which remind me of the pretty fall days we are so used to in Minnesota. I want to be able to close my eyes and imagine sitting by a bonfire as the autumn leaves fall slowly around me. I pick my fall tunes based off of the songs pace, rhythm, and overall lyrics. Without further ado, here are some songs that remind me of autumn!
#1: “There She Goes” by the La’s
“There She Goes” by the La’s is a classic walk in the park, watch the falling leaves, and feel like a main character song. This song reminds me of Gilmore Girls because I watch it every fall season, and this song is featured in one of the first episodes.
#2: “Amoeba” by Clairo
“Amoeba” by Clairo has always been one of my favorites, especially during fall! Clairo has a soft-toned voice, and I find it very comforting and warm. This song has a nice jumpy beat, but since her voice is so soft it gives the fall vibes I search for.
#3: “Bags” by Clairo
“Bags” by Clairo is also one of my fall favorites!! And I know what you’re thinking, “more Clairo?” but I just love to enjoy her songs during the fall. I feel like it has the same beat as “Amoeba,” but with this one, the lyrics are more spoken through and clear. This song reminds me of COVID-19 during the fall season because this is when I first started listening to Clairo.
#4: “Say Yes” by Elliott Smith
“Say Yes” by Elliott Smith is such a good fall song. Honestly, his whole Either/Or album is great if you’re looking for some fall vibes. Most of Elliott Smith’s songs remind me of the first time I watched Good Will Hunting because a lot of his songs are featured in the movie.
#5: “For Emma” by Bon Iver
“For Emma” by Bon Iver is also a classic fall song. I only ever listen to Bon Iver during the fall season, and thats because his vibe is so autumn. I love all the background beats he has in this song, and I love how flowy and soft his voice is. This song reminds me of driving down Pinecone Road and blasting this song with my windows down.
#6: “Sadness As A Gift” by Adrianne Lenker
“Sadness As A Gift” is currently one of my favorite songs! All of Adrianne Lenker’s songs are so well thought out and her lyricism is out of this world. When and if you listen to this song, please focus on the lyrics because that’s when you truly understand the meaning or story behind the song. I attended Adrianne Lenker’s concert this summer and it was amazing, especially this song.
#7: “Quiet, The Winter Harbor” by Mazzy Star
“Quiet, The Winter Harbor” by Mazzy Star is such a good song to cry to during the fall season. The mixture of Mazzy Stars’ deep sultry voice and the melancholy beats in the back creates such a classic sad song.
#8: “Heavy Metal Drummer” by Wilco
“Heavy Metal Drummer” by Wilco is a really good upbeat fall song. My dad was playing this song in the car, and it immediately reminded me of autumn. I like the twangy beats in the back and the fast-paced rhythm of the song.
#9: “Opera House” by Cigarettes After Sex
“Opera House” by Cigarettes After Sex is a chill, slow-paced song. Cigarettes After Sex is one of my favorite bands to listen to when I want a chill ambiance or if I’m trying to relax. If you like slower music, I definitely recommend listening to this song and all their other popular songs! I saw Cigarettes After Sex in concert, and this song was their encore. Fake snow fell slowly from the ceiling onto all of us in the pit. So, whenever I listen to this song, I imagine the snow falling on top of my sister and me as we sang along.
#10: “American Teenager” by Ethel Cain
“American Teenager” by Ethel Cain is such a good song! The chorus is absolutely amazing and makes me want to break out in a dance. I love listening to this song as I speed down River Road with my windows down.
#11: “Moon Song” by Phoebe Bridgers
“Moon Song” by Phoebe Bridgers is another classic sad song. Phoebe Bridgers’s voice has always been one of my favorites. She sings so soft and calm, however, in the chorus of this song, she gets more aggressive. The strumming beats in the back remind me a lot of autumn. I find this song and Phoebe Bridgers’s voice so comforting.
#12: “Sexy to Someone” by Clairo
“Sexy to Someone” by Clario is an upbeat, funky song to listen to during the fall season. This song is one of my favorites on her new album, and definitely gives me fall vibes. I love singing along to this song when getting ready in the morning and when I’m driving home from school.
#13: “Roslyn” by Bon Iver and St. Vincent
“Roslyn” by Bon Iver and St. Vincent is such an iconic fall song. As soon as I hear that first guitar strum, memories from past autumns flood my head immediately. This song reminds me a lot of the series Twilight because that is a series I tend to watch during the fall season.
#14: “No Machine” by Adrianne Lenker
“No Machine” by Adrianne Lenker is amazing. I couldn’t help but add another Adrianne Lenker song because her songs are gut-wrenchingly beautiful. “No Machine” is another one of my favorites that immediately gave me fall vibes. This song is probably on the sadder side of songs, so if you need a good cry I would definitely listen to this during the autumn season.
#15: “Back to the Old House” by The Smiths
“Back to the Old House” by The Smiths is another iconic fall song. Most songs by The Smiths give me major fall vibes. I honestly don’t know if I could listen to The Smiths in a season that isn’t fall. As most know, The Smiths’s lead singer had a deep calming voice, so I think that really adds to the vibe falls I feel when listening to the song.
