In July of 2022, authorities say four people were in critical condition and one person died after a stabbing that occurred in Somerset, Wisconsin late Saturday the 30th at approximately 3:45 p.m.
According to St. Croix County Sheriff Scott Knudson, deputies were dispatched to Apple River north of the Sunrise Bridge for a report that there were a “number of people had been stabbed.”
When officials arrived, they found five people who had been stabbed and discovered that the suspect had fled the scene by the time they arrived.
A total of four people were taken to Regions Hospital for their injuries, two of them were flown to the hospital. All four – a woman and three men are believed to be in their 20s.
Sheriff Knudson says that the fifth person identified as a 17-year-old Minnesota boy died at Lakeview.
The suspect – identified by Knudson as a 52-year-old Minnesota man, was found approximately 90 minutes away from where the stabbing happened. The suspect was found in a photo taken by someone who was in the area when the stabbing had happened.
Sheriff Knudson is quoted saying, “He hasn’t seen an attack like this in at least 15 years in the area.”
Police asked the community members to avoid the area as they continued their investigation and continued to collect evidence, during the July 30th news conference Sheriff Knudson stated that they were still looking for the weapon that was used in the stabbing.
The trial for this horrific event began on April 1st, 2024.
This trial, which is expected to be two weeks in length, began on Monday for a Minnesota man accused of stabbing several people on Wisconsin’s Apple River and killing a 17-year-old.
Jury selection started at 8 a.m. April 1st, in the case of 54-year-old Nicolae Miu of Prior Lake. Shortly before noon, the jury was seated, and opening testimony and statements began that afternoon.
Prosecutors attest that in July of 2022, Miu got into an altercation with a group of people who were tubing on the river at the time. Four adults in the group were injured and a 17-year-old, identified as Isaac Schuman, died as a result of his injuries.
Miu claims that he was snorkeling for a cell phone that went into the river, telling officials that the group attacked him and that created a situation where he had to use “self-defense.”
Prosecutors say that Miu pulled a knife from his pocket and attacked the group during the altercation. Investigators attest that Miu was bothering the group of teenagers on their tubes when the court papers say another group on tubes stopped to help out.
Witnesses in Isaac’s group says that Miu then punched or slapped a woman who was in the group confronting him, and then Miu was punched by a man and fell in the river, which then caused Miu to pull out a knife and start to stab the people around him.
Miu now faces six charges, including homicide, attempted homicide and battery. Miu pleaded not guilt in September of 2022.
