Through a consideration of the interconnected nature of nostalgia and the grace of moving on, we discover a compelling journey about paying tribute to the past while accepting the transforming force of change.

Life’s only constant is change, yet it feels impossible to move on. Although nostalgia gives us a comforting hug, the hurt from the past never truly goes away. It is like tossing flower petals into a river. It is beautiful to watch the petals float, yet it is sad to see them go. Though the best childhood memories and their beauty will always be treasured, it’s crucial to let them go. I look ahead at my future with a smile on my face and turn around to thank the past for its joy.

Nostalgia is the feeling of both happiness and regret that comes from remembering a previous experience and longing to relive it. It can come to you in many forms like revisiting an old house or smelling a familiar scent. Looking through old picture albums, it is easy to long for the simplicity of childhood when life’s greatest challenge was being told to go to bed. However, it is critical to look at these memories to measure how much you have grown. Holding onto the past will lead you to miss out on an abundance of wonderful opportunities that are just waiting for you.

Jumping into new beginnings is frightening. It is easy to stay tucked under your covers where you feel safe and comfortable, but there is no way to go anywhere without getting out of bed. It’s only when you throw aside that which no longer serves you that room opens up for new possibilities. Along with this thought, you must also give yourself grace for where you are. A previous you was wishing to be where you are now and you must continue to make them proud. Change does not come overnight, but with small steps we can continue to grow as humans.

Moving forward is an underestimated task. In today’s world, it feels that everyone around us knows exactly what they are doing. This mindset will often prevent feelings of accomplishment. Change can be beautiful, and we should embrace every step, no matter how small. When you begin to discover delight in every accomplishment, life becomes so much more enjoyable.  Every morning you wake up and make your bed deserves a pat on the back. Remember that you can never make the past come back, but you can choose how you live each day. In the future you may feel nostalgic of the moment you are currently in, so do not take it for granted.

Both the beauty of moving on and nostalgia are delicate parts of the human experience. Moving on encourages us to welcome the future, yet nostalgia pushes us to cherish the past. Together, they provide the groundwork for human growth and change, helping us become more mindful of the outside world as well as ourselves. Let us find beauty in moving on as we go towards what is ahead, and let us accept nostalgia as a gentle reminder of where we’ve been.
