The Minnesota flag was deemed to be offensive earlier this year to Native Americans and is now in the works of being redesigned. the MN state flag includes a state seal which involves a Native American riding a horse into the distance while a settler is plowing a field with his gun leaning against a stump off to the side. This seal suggests that many Native Americans were driven away from their homes because of early settlers.

The current Minnesota state flag is offensive so a Minneapolis state commission went to work on designing a new flag for MN. According to the North American Vexillological Association, Minnesota’s flag ranks 67th out of 72 U.S. and Canadian provincial flags.

Minnesota’s current flag design dates back to 1957 which was an evolution from the 1893 original.

Minnesota is not the first state to have to change their state flag design. Many original state flags did not stand the test of time and had to be changed. When it comes to modern flag design, it is said to be more simplistic with fewer colors and graphics. The new MN state flag is set to fly on May 11, 2024, which is Minnesota’s statehood day.
