Lua pele in Hawaii
The world’s largest active volcano, Mauna Loa, erupted for the first time in thirty eight years and has created a major boom in tourism on the island of Hawai’i throughout the last few weeks.
Mauna Loa, the volcano located near the town of Hilo, has erupted for the first time since 1984. The lava flow is not threatening any homes or businesses, but the lava is around two miles away from the Daniel K. Inouye Highway. This connects the east and west sides of the island and is used by many citizens. It appears that there won’t be an attempt to redirect the lava flow if it does keep approaching the highway, as many attempts to redirect lava have been very expensive and tend to be unsuccessful.
There is another volcano, twenty one miles from Mauna Loa, called Kilauea, which is also erupting. This is the first time they will be erupting together in thirty eight years. These lava flows have also been affecting the roads to the Mauna Loa Observatory. The island is expected to continue to see a massive increase in tourism, and many hotels are booked through December in the city of Hilo.
