SHS has many safety features to keep all of us safe
Officer Lyon explains that if something were to happen in the high school, officers from our local area would come the scene to help.
Sartell High School takes multiple precautions to keep the school, the students and the staff safe in the new high school. The new Sartell High School was built in preparation for safety in the case of active threats during school.
Sartell has taken many steps to ensure that its students and staff are safe throughout the day. Outside of the building here is a long pathway leading into the school. This was designed so it would be easy to view any possible threats that were comig toward the school.
This new school also has many safety features inside the school such as fire doors in each learning wing that lock when closed, an intruder alarm that flashes a yellow light, and glass windows to see an intruder from the learning studios.
Officer Lyon states, “In this school, all the doors are secured and locked during school hours, the only door that’s unlocked is up by the main office so then they would have to go from the outside into the office. We have the ALICE program. Teachers and staff members are trained on what to do at that point. We have the fire doors down each wing we can close and those automatically lock.”
Officer Lyon, Sartell’s school officer has explained how he plans and has been trained to keep everyone on the building safe if there were any acts of violence and/or danger in the high school: “My job is to actually go and try to neutralize the threat. So if the threat’s inside the building, I would try to find it, locate it, and neutralize it if possible.”

Sartell High School is still planning more safety precautions in case of danger or violence.
Officer Lyon states, “We are looking at getting window punchers for the windows, so each classroom would get one to be able to punch out the window, and we are also looking at getting some kind of rope device so they throw it out the window and [students/staff] actually would be able to scale down the rope.”
Sartell community officers were trained in the high school during the summer, so they are familiar with the building and what would have to be done to neutralize any danger that could come in. Other local departments also come into the school for walkthroughs throughout the building.
Officer Lyon explains:
If something were to happen, we would have officers come in from St. Cloud, Stearns County, Waite Park, Sauk Rapids and everyone from our area would come to the building.
