Many across the world have become aware of the “67” meme, from late 2024 until now, due to its versatility and longevity. You would never have thought that such a silly joke that originated from a song in the United States would become the new funniest joke, not just nationally, but globally.

The origin of “67” comes from the song, “Doot Doot (6 7)” by Skrilla. It was initially used for edits of sports and athletes on TikTok. The lyric commonly used was: “6-7, I just bipped right on the highway.” Soon, Gen Z would use it unironically when a video of a kid at a high school basketball game said it and did the iconic up and down hand movement. The boy’s name was Maverick Trevillian, and he didn’t even realize that he would create the biggest meme of 2025. After people realized that using it unironically was too corny, many started making it a satire joke and created a meme out of it.
How was “67” able to stay a meme, and how is it keeping alive in a social media trend of memes dying very quickly? With the idea of versatility, we can compare this to the “Low Taper Fade” meme. This meme originated from its own meme kind of like “67.” After a clip went viral of the streamer and songwriter Ericdoa freestyling, singing the lyric, “What if Ninja got a low taper fade,” it caught the attention of Ninja himself. Ninja is one of the biggest video game streamers, getting most of his fame from his talent in the game Fortnite.

After this clip went viral, it became a small meme that died very quickly, but Ninja didn’t think so. A new clip of Ninja went viral of him saying, “You know what’s crazy?… that low taper fade… is still massive.” This became a hilarious video as the meme was obviously dead, and he began to drag it. The new meme was actually of him dragging on the original meme. How does this relate to versatility? People would start to relate the words massive, huge, and big to the “Low Taper Fade” meme. With such common words, it was hard not to think of the meme. This is how “67” has had so much longevity.

The combination of numbers was so very common in the world, especially for younger people in school with math classes. When you can relate something funny to your daily life, it’s easy to keep alive.
As seen in these videos, whether it’s a ship of people in France, Vietnamese in boats, or a portal to New York City, these people may speak different languages, but they all know “67.” From adults to kids, they are all able to connect with something small yet joyful. In times of hate, discrimination, and racism, there is something that will get rid of those barriers with just a silly meme. Some people dislike these social media trends and slang, when really, it is a good thing for everyone all around the world. So before you judge something as too silly or dumb, think about how it could be used as something great.
