Since May of 2025, a new policy has been in effect requiring all air travelers to present a REAL ID when flying. For those who do not yet have one, a $45 fee will be applied. The fee will cover a 10-day travel period, giving passengers a small window to update their identification. This policy was created to strengthen security and ensure more reliable identification. Airlines and airport staff have been trained to enforce this rule efficiently.
According to tsa.gov, if you do not have a REAL ID, you can get an Enhanced Driver’s License or a valid U.S Passport, which also meets federal identification requirements and allows you to travel domestically and cross the U.S. border. Both forms of identification are widely recognized and accepted at airports, federal buildings, and other secure locations. Travelers are encouraged to apply for these alternatives well in advance of their trips to avoid delays at the airport.
