The suspect from the recent incident at Brown University has not only been found but also linked to a separate shooting involving the tragic death of a MIT professor.
Last weekend a shooting took place at Brown University during finals (Dec. 13th). The shooting left two students fatally shot and nine others severely wounded. The gunman was seen roaming campus neighborhoods hours before the tragedy happened, he was dressed in all black which caused troubles with identifying him. The lack of information on the suspect’s appearance lead to a five day manhunt.
Two days later, on December 15th, an MIT professor was fatally shot in his own home and died at the hospital. Professor Loureri was a respected scientist, not only on at MIT but also internationally. He was known for his work in plasma physics and fusion research.
On December 18th law enforcement connected the two shootings. Video surveillance showed similarities in suspects, rental car records and investigations showed similar/the same car both near the professors house and the Brown campus, lastly several public tips allowed them to link the shootings to each other.
Also on December 18th, police went to a storage facility in Salem, New Hampshire with a arrest warrant where they found 48 year old Portuguese suspect, Claudio Manuel Neves-Valente dead. He was found with two guns on him, and he is believed to have committed suicide. Witness tips, doorbell footage, and cross state surveillance lead police to the storage facility.
Currently, there is no clear statement of intent and investigators believe the suspect acted alone. However, some factors have been revealed. First, the suspect as well as Professor Loureri have prior academic connections. They both attended the same academic program in Portugal. They were overlapping years from 1995 to 2000 but there is no evidence currently that reveals that they had a personal relationship. For the Brown shooting, there is also no clear motives. No one is sure why the suspect chose Brown, the specific classroom, or chosen victims. There have been multiple theories online but these are all just speculations and have no official confirmation.
