Bulldozers reshape history as the White House East Wing faces demolition

The White House is being remodelled and is making a big change in history.

The East Wing has long been home to the office of the First Lady, which Eleanor Roosevelt turned into a formal, professional space during her husband’s presidency. She used it to host events, lead her advocacy work, and meet with groups that represented everyday Americans, such as the Girl Scouts and the Women’s Trade Union League. The space became a hub for women’s rights and community engagement, shaping the way first ladies would use their platform to make lasting impacts on the nation.

Why is there a ballroom being built?

The White House, on Monday, October 20, 2025, started the process of demolishing the East Wing in The White House. A $250 million ballroom will be built to create a large entertaining space. Donald Trump has complained that the space is too small, only holding 200 people. The new construction will hold roughly 1,000 people. A new ballroom is also being built to modernize its event spaces. Trump would like the space to be more appealing so that many important events can be held there.

Who is paying for the ballroom?

There have been growing concerns about how Donald Trump is funding the renovation. He clarified that the ballroom’s construction will not use taxpayer money, as it is being privately funded by several major tech companies, including Meta, Apple, Amazon, and Google, among others. In addition, several wealthy family donors have contributed to supporting this large renovation. This private funding ensures that the project can move forward without relying on government resources and allows them to build a bigger, better ballroom with modern features suitable for hosting major events.

How will the construction change The White House over the years?

Trump said the renovation is meant to show progress and bring a fresh, modern touch while keeping a classic style. Supporters believe it will help the local economy by creating new jobs and attracting more visitors. However, critics are concerned that the involvement of big companies could give them too much power over future decisions. In the future, Trump would like to hold state dinners and other larger events in the ballroom or on the South Lawn. Overall, the renovation has caused both excitement and disagreement, showing how divided people are about Trump’s actions and leadership.
