On May 4, NBC News released an article stating that an 8 month pregnant woman from Guatemala illegally crossed the border from Mexico into the United States, and now faces deportation.
Shortly after she crossed, she was caught by Border Patrol. They brought her into a hospital to have her baby, where she was closely monitored.
After she had her baby, she was sent to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and placed under custody.
Once she was detained by ICE, she was given a court date to appear before a judge, and was given immediate access to a lawyer.
According to Reuters, the woman wasn’t deported immediately, as she was intervened by Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs.
In Guatemala, she faced violence and little opportunity, like many thousands of others there. This forced many to push north into the US, even if it meant breaking the law.
The Trump Administration has vowed to crackdown on illegal immigrants, many of which they have deported.
Outside of this case, 3 other children were deported with two separate families, even though they were granted citizenship because they were born in the US. One of these children was a 4 year old, who had stage 4 cancer and was being treated for it in the US, until their family was forced to leave.
Tom Homan, Trump’s border czar claimed that the mothers wanted their children to come with them, even if they were considered legal citizens of the United States.
However, one of the families’ lawyers said that the mothers were forced to take their children with them.
NBC News also said that the Trump administration has aimed to get rid of birthright citizenship, and they attempted this through an executive order, but federal courts halted it.
The Supreme Court will have a hearing on this case on May 15.
The Guatemalan woman and her baby are currently awaiting a court date to see what will happen to them.
