If you follow any golf you likely spent the past weekend listening to Jim Nantz and watching The Masters. The Masters is a golf tradition and one of the four golf majors. Each year The Masters is hosted at Augusta National, in Augusta, Georgia. Many classic golf traditions take place during the masters making it a one of a kind major. The class and history surrounding the tournament such as a stable menu, the classic azaleas, the green jacket ceremony, and champions dinner make this one of golfs most iconic events.
Last year’s (2024) Masters was won by Scottie Scheffler who has won a total of 2 Masters. This year’s winner was huge golf name, Rory Mcllroy. This win is especially important to Mcllroys careers because this was his last needed major win to achieve his career grand slam. He joined 5 other golfers to become the 6th golfer to join this club.
Mcllroy had been on a 11 year no major win streak and each year, when the Masters came around, fans would always wonder if this was his year. Mcllroy’s last major win was at the 2014 PGA Championship. This year Rory proved to be at the top of the game and finished 11 under. The 2nd day Rory stayed neck and neck with Dechambeau, then on the final day was able to pull ahead before Justin Rose came up and ended up tying with Mcllroy leading to a playoff on the 18th hole.
Justin Rose has had a history with playoff holes and lost his Masters playoff hole in 2017 to Sergio Garcia. This year both Rose and Mcllroy had beautiful drives off the tee box, Rory slightly outdrove Rose giving him a tiny advantage. Rose then hit his approach shot to the green sticking it a makable 1 putt away from the pin. Rory hit his approach shot perfectly leaving it a few feet from the pin. After what seemed like ages of Rose lining up and reading his putt, he missed and had a 2 putt for par. Mcllroy lined up his ball and made his putt, he immediately fell to his feet crying while the crowd chanted his name. 11 years in the making and Mcllroy finally did it, his Masters win lead to his achievement of a career grand slam. He joins the exclusive club made of him, Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods. After winning the first person he went to was his caddie, then wife, Erica, and daughter, Poppy.
The winning purse which Mcllroy won was 4.2 million dollars which is 600k more than Scheffler won last year. The first thing that came to Rorys mind was his green jacket, after celebrating with his family for a short time, Mcllroy said to the audience “I’ve gotta go get my green jacket.”
