Back in 2023, Dylan Simmons was arrested for driving his vehicle into a crowd of people. The incident happened after a fight between two groups at a Forest Lake park. He was sentenced this Thursday to over 19 years in prison.
The 21-year-old was found guilty by a jury in December of second-degree murder, criminal vehicular homicide, and three counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon after he admitted to driving his vehicle into a crowd at Lakeside Memorial Park in Forest Lake.
One of the victims of this incident was 17-year-old Darisha Bailey Vath who died at the scene.
Simmons and Vath were both among two groups that were fighting on July 16, 2023, at the Lakeside Memorial Park. According to the police, both groups were armed with weapons, including baseball bats, hammers, and knives.
Court documents say that Simmons got into his car and after the fight de-escalated and drove in the direction of several people, colliding with a vehicle Vath was supposedly in.
The criminal complaint also indicated that Simmons backed up and again drove towards multiple people, striking Vath with the front passenger side before running her over with both the front and rear passenger side tires.
