Vikings make moves

Vikings sign new offensive guard and trade for a new running back.

The Vikings have started the season off 0-2, and to combat their lackluster start they have decided to make some roster moves.

They started off week 3 by signing a new free agent guard named Dalton Risner. Risner previously played for the Denver Broncos. The guard visited the Viking’s facilities multiple times during the pre-season in hopes to ink a new deal, but the two sides weren’t able to agree to terms. Many fans were hoping for this signing with posts on Instagram demanding the Vikings sign him. Dalton was finally able to reach a deal this week worth up to 4million dollars for a one year deal. The 28 year old will be entering his fifth season in the NFL this year. The Vikings are hoping that bringing in the veteran guard will help them with their pass blocking and open up holes for their running backs.

Speaking of running backs, the Vikings decided they could use a little extra help in that department as well. Later in the week, the Vikings traded for former Rams running back Cam Akers. The Vikings swapped late round draft picks in order to get Akers. Vikings second year head coach Kevin O’Connell worked with Akers in Los Angeles for one year before being offered the Viking’s job.

With recent Vikings departure Dalvin Cook, the Vikings have been trying to find his replacement. They thought they might have had an answer in-house with Alexander Mattison, but with the lack of production from Mattison, the Vikings have decided they would try a new route. Akers is young running back who is still on his rookie deal that he got after be drafted 52 overall in the 2020 draft.

Akers also shares an eerily similar career to former Vikings running back Dalvin Cook. Both played college football for Florida state, both were drafted in the second round, and both played/plays for the Vikings. The big question for Akers is that he tore his achilles during training camp of the 2021 season, he was however able to come back for a postseason run when the Rams were able to defeat the Bengals in the Super Bowl that year.
