Shredding at the Capitol: Red Bull Heavy Metal rocks St. Paul, Minnesota

The Red-Bull Heavy Metal competition returned for a second year in St Paul, Minnesota at the state capitol building. The single day snowboarding contest took place on February 1st, where some of the world’s top street snowboarders competed, showing off their various talents and skills. Street snowboarding is classified as a creative and aggressive style that take place in urban settings. It takes place on hard surfaces such as asphalt or concrete. Therefore it involves snowboarders going on rails, ledges, stairs, fences, and jumping and performing other tricks/moves. The competition had three different competing zones which highlighted different features of street snowboarding. The Red-Bull Heavy Metal competitions have made a big impact to the snowboarding world by making street style snowboarding popularized. Thus showcasing the creativity and talent which attracts new riders and fans creating a strong community.

The first ever Red-Bull Heavy Metal competition took place on 2002 in the streets of Niagara Falls, New York. It was held for many years after before taking a break for nearly a decade before getting revived in 2022. The 2022 competition was held in Duluth Minnesota and in 2023 it was held in Detroit Michigan. In 2024, it was held at the St. Paul capital where it then returned again this year. It also was held this year in Boston at the City Hall Plaza on February 22.

This year’s winners for Zone 1 were

  • Veda Hallen and Beck Loben.
  • The Runners-Up: Iris Pham and Joey Fava. 

From Zone 2 the winners were

  • Veda Hallen and Sam Anderson 
  • Runners-Up: Jess Perlmutter and Austin Visintainer. 

From Zone 3 winners were

  • Iris Pham and Austin Visintainer
  • Runners-Up: Jess Perlmutter and Quin Elul
