Lodged in the heart of East St. Cloud, Val’s Rapid Serv has been serving delicious burgers and unforgettable memories for over 65 years. Founded by Val and Kathleen Henning, the restaurant opened its doors decades ago, long before St. Cloud became known for its fast-food chains.

Over the years, Val’s has stood witness to major events in history—from JFK’s presidency and the Vietnam War to the era of personal computers and phones. Despite the passing decades, one thing remains constant, the experiences. For generations, families have gone to Val’s, and the experience has stayed remarkably consistent since your grandparents first discovered this local gem.

In its early years, Val’s was only open seasonally, from February to December. Now, the restaurant remains open year-round, serving locals and visitors alike from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., ensuring that their mouth-watering burgers are always within reach.

Originally known as “Val’s Rapid Serv,” the restaurant was part of a small, independent group of regional franchises that sought to compete with larger national chains like McDonald’s and Burger King. While many of these Rapid Serv locations closed as the fast-food industry evolved, Val’s remains the sole survivor, standing testament to the power of community and consistency. Today, it’s simply known as “Val’s,” a name synonymous with high-quality burgers, friendly service, and a nostalgic piece of St. Cloud history.

Val’s may have adapted over time, particularly with the introduction of modern ordering systems, but the core of the menu remains the same: simple, delicious, and perfectly satisfying.

My favorite is the double cheeseburger, which can be customized with all the works (pickles, tomatoes, onions, ketchup, and bacon). For just $4.75, you get a wonderful burger that’s packed with flavor. I also recommend adding on a small fry for $2.45, and you’ll have a side that’s both plentiful and perfectly salty, with enough to feed two. To round out the meal, Val’s offers a milkshake for just $2.45, with over 20 different flavors to choose from.

The burgers here are a cut above the typical fast food fare. The quality is exceptional, and the fries, crispy and generously salted, are as iconic as the burger itself. One of the joys of dining at Val’s is the sense of satisfaction that comes with each bite. On my first visit, I learned the hard way that a small fry is more than enough, a large one is enough to feed a small family, and you’ll be lucky to finish it all!

For those not in the mood for a burger, Val’s also offers alternatives like fish and chicken sandwiches. And with their wide variety of soft drinks, it’s clear that Val’s has something for everyone.

What really sets Val’s apart is the experience. It’s not just about the food—it’s about the atmosphere. Val’s has been a staple of St. Cloud for over half a century, and walking through the doors feels like stepping into a timeless tradition. Whether you’re a regular or a first-timer, there’s a sense of familiarity and warmth that makes the restaurant feel like an old friend. The service is quick and friendly, and while the menu may be simple, there’s something comforting about the consistency of it all.

In an age where fast food chains seem to come and go, Val’s stands as a beloved fixture in St. Cloud, offering not just great food but a glimpse into the past. Whether you’re there for a quick lunch or sharing a meal with loved ones, the charm of this restaurant is undeniable. Val’s isn’t just a place to grab a bite—it’s an experience, a part of St. Cloud’s history, and a reminder that sometimes, the best things in life are the ones that stay the same.

So, if you’re ever in the area, don’t miss out on the chance to try what many locals consider the best burger in town. At Val’s, you’re not just getting a meal; you’re getting a taste of history.
