The Sartell Sabre gymnastics team’s season has begun, and the Sabre gymnasts are ready to kick off the 2023-24 season!

Sartell gymnastics has been working hard to put their routines together for the upcoming season. There are 18 athletes on the team this year, five of which are seniors. The 2024 seniors include Kylie Weber, Cora Stark, Kendra Deragisch, Elizabeth Jarnot, and Shayla Scepaniak.

On Tuesday, December 12th, the Sabres had their first meet against the St. Cloud Crush. Tensions are usually high each time this dual comes around each year.

Sartell freshman Evy Larkin took first place in the junior varsity all-around competition, scoring a 31.8. She also took the top spot on vault and beam. The Sabre’s junior varsity took first place against the Crush, scoring a 124.55. This is the first time in Sabre gymnastics history that the Sabre’s JV has come out on top against the Crush’s junior varsity team.

Sartell’s varsity team took second place, scoring a 131.55. Sartell freshman Kaitlynn Cusipag took 3rd place in the all-around competition scoring a 33.55, followed by sophomore Ally Tromburg with a 32.875.

Looking forward this season, the Sabre’s have big goals they hope to accomplish. The team aspires to build a strong relationship with each other, putting the team over themselves. Last season, the gymnasts backed up the idea of “so teamy you’ll puke.”

Most people may not realize that although gymnastics is an individual sport, it is the same amount of a team sport as well. Although the team may not be able to be up on each apparatus together, they are the support system that allows each individual to do well. If you were to attend a gymnastics meet, you would hear an abundance of yells and cheers throughout the gym. These yells and cheers bring energy and positivity to the gymnast performing, so she can be sure her team has her back.
