New United Cup event in Australia to kick off 2022-2023 tennis season

December 12, 2022

December 29th marks the start of the first edition of the United Cup, an annual mixed-team tournament with the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) and men’s Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), in which 18 countries will compete for 500 ranking points and USD $15 million.

Men and women will compete again for the first time since the 2019 Hopman Cup, as the previous ATP Cup ran from 2020-2022 as a men-only tournament.

This is largely due to an increasing cooperation between the ATP and WTA and the prioritization of equality between the tours.

The event takes place over 11 days in the Australian cities of Brisbane, Perth, and Sydney, at the Pat Rafter Arena, the RAC Arena, and the Ken Rosewall Arena, respectively.

Brisbane will host matches between Poland, Switzerland, and Kazakhstan (Group B), as well as Italy, Brazil, and Norway (Group E).

Perth hosts Greece, Belgium, and Bulgaria (Group A), and France, Croatia, and Argentina (Group F).

Sydney hosts the United States, Germany, and the Czech Republic (Group C), and Spain, Australia, and Great Britain (Group D).

The tournament is round-robin style, so that each team plays against every other team.

Then, from January 6-8th in Sydney, the semifinals and grand final amongst the top four nations—each of the city winners as well as the next-best performing team—will take place in Sydney.

The event includes talented players from across the world, such as Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal, the ATP’s number one and two in the world (both representing Spain), and the WTA’s number one Iga Świątek (Poland).

In addition, the tournament prepares players for the Australian Open, which begins on January 16th in Melbourne and is the first of four Grand Slams of the season.
