Taylor Swift is making history once again

November 28, 2022

On October 21, Taylor Swift released her 10th studio album at the break of midnight (ET), and Midnights has been breaking records ever since its release. Some say she is the music industry.

The Midnights album consists of 13 tracks, all from 13 sleepless nights Taylor has experienced. She also released the Midnights (3am Edition) later in the night, containing seven additional tracks. In contrast to her last two non re-recorded albums, Midnights is more upbeat and has more of a pop sound.

The Midnights album has broken several records, which Entertainment Weekly has reported on:

Here is one puzzle piece (album back cover) which is a part of the Midnights clock you can acquire from purchasing all the vinyl options from Taylor Swift’s online store. (Rachel Schafer)
  1. In the Billboard Hot 100, Taylor Swift became the first artist to hold all of the top 10 spots at once in history. Her song “Anti-Hero” is still claiming the number one spot on Billboard Hot 100 and has been there at number one for four weeks now. Taylor also hit the top spot for the most top 10s in the Billboard Hot 100 history for women, hitting 40, which passed Madonna’s record of 38.
  2. In sales, Midnights received more than 1.578 million equivalent album units in its first week in the United States, with the traditional album sales containing more than 1 million units sold for CDs, vinyls, the cassette variety, and the digital album downloads together. The first week of Midnights was the biggest week for an album since 2015 during Adele’s first week of 25 hitting 3.482 million equivalent album units.
  3. In streaming, Midnights achieved the largest streaming week of the year so far, in four days, with 357 million on-demand official streams (audio and video), per Billboard. Taylor Swift’s album now has the biggest streaming week ever in history for a female artist album, coming in third for all albums.
  4. In Spotify, Midnights hit the most-streamed album in a day on October 21, and Taylor also broke the most-streamed artist in a day record for Spotify’s records.
  5. In Apple Music, Midnights became the largest album ever released in Spatial Audio on Apple Music globally, in compliance with the streaming service. Taylor also has achieved the top spot for the largest pop album of all time, from the first-day streams, on Apple Music.

This didn’t hit all of the records Midnights has broken, but it sure is an eye-opener on how powerful Taylor Swift and her music really are!
