Teenagers raped and set on fire in India
Two women were set on fire by their alleged rapists in India this past week, sparking further outrage in an already fierce movement against abuse of women in their country.
The first attack happened in Jharkand on Friday after a 16-year-old’s apparent gang rape the night before. The victim, who reported the attack to authorities, was killed by what authorities believe to be a revenge attack by the men who raped her.
The accused, reported by the family to the local council, faced a 50,000 rupee fine and had to do 100 sit-ups for punishment.
The latest victim, a 17 year old also from Jharkand suffered burns to 70% of her body, after surviving her sexual assault and attempted murder. Local authorities have arrested a man, but no one has been charged yet.
There is no correlation between the two similar crimes, but are evident of the issues facing India over the status and abuse of women. Protests and outrage have erupted over these incidents and several similar cases in India over the past several months.
