Facebook data breach
Last weekend, it was revealed that Cambridge Analytica, a data firm that aided Donald Trump’s campaign, has taken the information of over 50 million Facebook users from their profiles.
Data was first collected from personality quizzes that were shared amongst Facebook users, with an initial purpose for academic reasons, were later given to Cambridge Analytica. They obtained profile information and, without permission of the owners of the accounts, used the data to build an immense marketing database.
The company, backed by many right-wing investors, gave away its information to several political campaigns.
Senator Mark Warren told ABC news “I think it’s time for the CEO, Mr. [Mark] Zuckerberg, and other top officials to come and testify and not tell part of the story, but tell the whole story of their involvement … not only with the Trump campaign but their ability to have their platform misused by the Russians.”
Senator Amy Klobuchar was among a group of Senators in the Senate Judiciary Committee who are calling for a hearing with Facebook’s CEOs.
Facebook gave records of the breach to Robert Mueller’s special investigation team and has said they are cooperating.
