Miami Bridge Collapse

A pedestrian bridge in Miami, Florida collapsed Thursday killing at least six and injuring more.

The collapse happened around 1:30 Thursday afternoon nearby Florida International’s University. Cars underneath the bridge, along with construction workforces completing the unfinished bridge were both present at the time of the ruin.

Alavaro Zabaleta, a spokesperson for the Miami police department said that the collapsed structure was “very fragile” to NBC news. “Engineers told us last night it’s got to be done very carefully,” Zabaleta said. “Not only because of the fact that we have to preserve evidence, not only because of the fact that there may be possible victims under there and we have to treat it very delicately, but because of the safety of the rescuers as well, because of the unstableness of the bridge.”

The bridge was to be opened early next year with the celebratory unveiling occurring just five days from the collapse. The bridge was expected to be able to withstand hurricane force winds.

Susie Bermudez, a witness to the accident, said this of it to NBC news, “I was three seconds away from being under the bridge, but I looked forward,” said Susie Bermudez. “All of a sudden I saw the bridge collapse, and it started from the left side of the bridge and it really shocked me.”
