Imaginal Disk by Magdalena Bay is your new favorite album

Imaginal Disk by Magdalena Bay is one of the most breathtaking and out-of-this-world albums you’ll ever hear. It was released on August 23rd, 2024, through Mom + Pop Music. This album was made by the incredible pop duo consisting of Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin, who wrote and produced all of it, and it is the best album of the 2020s decade so far. Here is my review of the incredible Imaginal Disk.
First, let’s talk a little about Magdalena Bay and the album. This pop duo consists of Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin. They write and produce all of their music, and they began when they met in high school. Before or after you listen to Imaginal Disk, definitely check out their first album, Mecurial World. It’s a great debut album and really shows what they have in store. It transitions directly into Imaginal Disk and is a complete step up from their first album.
There is actually a small concept to this album, where the two of them discover the missing piece between humankind and primates. The missing piece is an extraterrestrial LaserDisc, inserted into her forehead, which is the cover of the album. When True, the main character, tries to get updated, it gets rejected, and she must learn what it’s like to be human.

“She Looked Like Me!” is the first track on the album, and it opens it up perfectly. This song is basically showing off what they can do with their production. It starts with some creepy synth sound with Mica lightly singing, and it gives an introduction into her very unique voice. Pay attention to the lyrics at the start, as you might hear them later. Soon enough, huge electronic and bubbly drums come in. The drums cut in and out, bigger and grander each time, showing off their unexpected nature. All in all this is a very impressive showcase of vocals and their beautiful synth production.

“Killing Time” starts with this very groovy and smooth bassline that will play throughout the duration of the song. The production becomes fuller and fuller as it progresses, featuring multiple instrumental breakdowns and a variety of synths. Mica shows after her vocal range, and an unexpected electric guitar and heavier synths come in with Mica singing an epic outro. This song really shows the variety of tools they use to craft the perfect track. The dopamine you get from this is crazy, and it keeps you hooked the whole time.

This album is so perfect that even the interludes are good. It has a bright piano with gorgeous synths and drums in the background. Mica is repeating “true blue” in the background, and it is so calming. In this interlude, some lyrics may be confusing as they explain more of the concept/story. This is a beautiful transition into the next track.

“Image” is the most popular song off the album. It’s a hit right off the start. With their 80s-sounding synth and drum production, it is so entertaining. Now, a hit isn’t a hit without a catchy chorus, and this song has exactly that. You won’t get this song out of your head for a long time.

Blast this song at full volume on your headphones; it’s the greatest feeling ever. It has a large and absolutely charismatic piano playing through the verses and sets up the super nice chorus. The chorus comes in with these heavy synths hitting you like an airplane zooming by you. Even though this song may be five minutes long, it’s breathtaking throughout the whole thing.

After transitioning perfectly into this song, it feels like an extension of “Death and Romance.” With such poppy-sounding synths and drums into an atmospheric-sounding outro, this song is such a great listen. Mica’s singing is so soothing and fits so perfectly with the production.

This is one of the sweetest and cutest songs you’ll hear. With soft production into the chorus, Mica sings: “I wanna make you mine, I told you a thousand times, you’re my valentine.” After a perfect build-up, these heavy synths come in, and it feels like they are going right through your head into the other ear. It’s such a unique song. It gets to the climax with Mica’s dramatic high-pitched singing, and you’re left wondering how we get here.

This is definitely my favorite song off the album. This song shows off a perfect progression of production in a song. It starts so soft with a basic drum beat and synth pattern as they keep adding on and on with almost waves of synths. It creates the perfect buildup into this totally different and epic outro, where the production seems to be stuttering and glitchy, and it’s so cinematic. I never get tired of this song.

“Tunnel Vision” is the perfect title for this song. It starts with these almost creepy strings that lead to these drum breaks that make you think there’s going to be a huge hit in sound, but it leaves you with almost nothing. After they fake you out a couple more times, it finally drops, but not even into the largest sound of the song. They create this trippy transition with their fake outs and into this two-minute outro of heavy bass, synth, and electric guitar. It’s such an evil-sounding but super cool way to end the song.

Do you recognize this song? You may be hearing Lil Yachty’s “Running out of Time.” They did production for this song and gave it to Lil Yachty for his album “Let’s Start Here.” They reused the production for their own version, and it’s so funky and bass-driven. Such a fun song and cool backstory.

Not much to say about this track, as it is an interlude. Now, even though it’s just an interlude, they are so creative with the way they make it. They add more to the story with this unique interlude.

This song is how you want to feel when you walk in the room. It screams confidence and charisma. The crisp and tight drums drive the song towards the dirty guitar chorus. With yet another amazing and full outro, this song is such a delight to listen to.

“Cry for Me” is a fan favorite for Magdalena Bay, and it is self-explanatory. This two-part song is the best listening experience of the album. It starts with this dark synth production with almost the total opposite bright sounding strings and bass. Mica’s voice makes any song sound so cool, and it’s perfect for this. After a transition into the second part, it totally opens up the song with this beautiful piano. The song builds and builds, and they were able to create one of the best songs of the decade so far.

This is my least favorite song, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. I would consider this song almost perfect with Mica’s vocals and production that makes you float out of your seat. It’s only missing the unexpected nature of the other songs, but in general, it’s a very nice listen to transition into the final track.

When you get to this song, you’ll be sad that it’s the last. The production is definitely much different than the other songs. It sounds more upbeat and happy. The biggest jump scare is the huge synth that comes in and out before the chorus. After listening to this incredibly catchy chorus, you might recognize the lyrics from the first song. She repeats the same lyrics in this much differently sounding song than the intro track. It’s such a wholesome song, and it will have you smiling all the way to the end until you realize it’s over.
