Vacations debut studio album review: ‘Changes’

About the Band:

About the album:

1. Anything Could Happen

This song is a great opener for this album. It starts with a calming bass and drum beat that welcomes you into the music. It recognizes that you can feel when something new is going to happen, or you know something is happening, and you just have to accept it. Then it picks up with this excited guitar vibe to it and talks about how time can move so fast, but it’s also exciting to see the new things.

2. On Hold

“On Hold” talks about the feelings that come with changes, and that you knew these feelings were coming, but maybe not how to deal with them. I love the part that goes “You didn’t want this, you never meant this,” because the way Campbell Burns sings it is so good. I love the chords, they’re so beautiful to me. “On Hold” also brings up how these changes you were so excited about might not always turn out the way you wanted them to. So the lyrics “You didn’t want this, you never meant this,” have extra meaning.

3. Moving Out

In this song, I can imagine Burns moving out on his own and going through all these struggles. I can also imagine people moving out for college going through these feelings as well. Vacations lyrics can be very literal, which is also why I like them so much. For example, “Moving out, I had my doubts, but a boy must become a man of the house” is talking about the doubts you have going into your own place, and how scary that can be. This song also touches on how you can’t really escape this fear because you can’t always be in the shadow of your parents.

4. Telephones

“Telephones” is one of the very first songs I listened to by Vacations, and I instantly fell in love with it. This reminds me of how I’m graduating high school soon, and some of the people that I see every day, I probably won’t see ever again. So I connect deeply with the lyrics, “wherever I go, you’ll always be next to me.” These people formed who I am today, and gave me some of the happiest memories and years of my life. I’ll never forget that. I also love the intro because it gives me a sense of nostalgia with the calming guitar, and the song ends with that same guitar to make a full circle.

5. Club Social

I think this song talks about the anxiety that comes with talking to new people and just being around people you don’t know. And that still goes along with the changes theme throughout the entire album because maybe you’re moving or going to college and you have to meet new people. The song’s end talks about how if you don’t listen to the voices and just turn the other way, they “won’t be a concern.” And that shows how you can just get lost in thought, but if you get out of it, everything will still be okay.

6. Steady

This is my number one favorite song off this album because it reminds me of my own life. This song is about how having support through these changes is essential. It’s a thank you to someone in your life who is by your side when you start feeling uneasy and scared about the unknowns. I love this song because it reminds me of how my boyfriend has been with me through everything, and he really does keep me steady through all of these changes that come with being a high school senior.

7. Honey

This is another one of my favorite songs by Vacations because I can really relate to it. It’s a shorter song, but it still really speaks. “Honey” is about how it’s never too late to set your own path and move away from what you used to be. It also reassures you that you will find your way in time, and it will never be too late. This is incredibly important at my age because everyone is making their own decisions on college, and finding themselves throughout that process.

8. Soft

“Soft” is such a beautiful song that I think anyone can appreciate. I love the chords in the beginning and the little guitar riff in the middle. Soft is about how it’s easy to overthink simple things, but they’re not as tough as they seem. You don’t have to run from the thoughts because you’re stronger than you think. I think the calming melody that matches the lyrics enforces the message that you are not soft and can pull yourself out of these moments.

9. Be There

I haven’t listened to this song too much, but it’s still a good one. I would say it’s about a goal you have for yourself or a relationship that you want to work out. You can feel close and far away at the same time, and Campbell Burns (the singer) keeps repeating “I’m fading away,” showing that it’s okay not to always be close to your goals, as well as how relationships don’t always work out.

10. In Retrospect

This song is perfect as a closer to the album. It talks about how all of these feelings and changes were worth it despite the hard work it took. It reflects on how you can become a completely different person with time and growth. And I feel like a lot of people my age and really anyone at any point in their life, will change and be different from what they used to be. Sometimes for better or worse. “In Retrospect,” focus on the positives of changing and becoming more true to yourself, which wraps up the album Changes beautifully.
